HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT: PHYSICIAN LEARNING TECHNIQUES

What Motivates Physicians To Engage In CME Activities?

There are many reasons doctors participate in CME activities. These can include, but are certainly not limited to the following (in no particular order):

  1. Most states require a certain number of CME credits each year for physicians to retain licensure. Click here to see current CME licensing requirements.
  2. The AMA requires 150 CME Credits over a three-year period, for physicians to be a part of the Physician Recognition Award program.
  3. Doctors want to learn "cutting edge" information.
  4. Doctors want to attend for the free dinner/free giveaway.
  5. Doctors want to "see and be seen".
  6. Doctors want reinforcement of their current practicing habits.

Which of these do you think is the main reason docs participate in CME? Click here for a ranking:

It is important to create CME activities that reflect the needs and wants of the physicians otherwise they won’t participate. When surveyed, physicians generally choose to attend a particular CME activity based on:

  • Location
  • Timing
  • Faculty
  • Topic
  • Reputation of the CME provider

The order of these items changes year to year. Some things are constants — Florida and California always seem to be top choices for location. Also, docs appear to like hotels and resorts for symposia. Gender is also an issue; women physicians are much less likely to go to a meeting out of their local area. And, although controversial, social events do affect attendance (See Social Events and CME).

Stick to a good CME recipe of :

  • Excellent faculty
  • Needed, cutting-edge education
  • Nice location
  • Reputable CME provider

This combination will go a long way to increasing CME activity participation.
